Son of John Pickard 1744 and Susannah Shutt
William was baptised 23 Apr 1780 (1) in Parkham, Devon.. William did not marry. He chose a Naval Career. He went into service on 7 Apr 1803, becoming Bosun in 1806.
Her served aboard a number of ships and was involved in many conflicts. He retired in 1831and lived in Northam until his death. There is an excellent article by Roger Sugar on William Pickard - Bosun on Bideford Community Newsletter
William died on 29 Jan 1832 (2) aged 52 years. He is buried in Northam Churchyard. His stone reads:
Sacred to the memory of William Pickard a Boatswain in H.M. Navy, Who departed this life the 29th Day of Jan 1832, aged 52 Years. Who served under George the 3rd The Regency & Reign of George the 4th and Also under William the 4th. Who fought in Egypt, Africa, France, Spain, Germany and Italy. With best but little thought my bones in Native Land would rest.
