The story of this family has a tragic ending for Louisa and Ellis.
Before meeting Louisa, Ellis had served seven years with the Sussex Regiment as a private travelling to Barbados and the West Indies, he contracted Syphilis which resulted in a siezure affecting his speech, and perhaps led to the problems he had in later life. Whilst working at Gurteens he developed a paranoia that people were persecuting him, his behaviour deteriorated to the point where Gurteens installed a loom at his home so he could carry on working and supporting his family. Ellis also began to drink heavily.
Louisa in Nov 1899 was feeling unwell and visited her daughter Kate who was staying with a Great Grandaunt Deborah Riley in Bishops Stortford, she returned home a week later. The following August Louisa gave birth to twin girls. Ellis would not accept these daughters were his , he accused Louisa of infidelity in Bishops Stortford. Over the next few weeks the paranoia deepened and on 12 Sep 1900 Ellis murdered Louisa and their twin daughters at their home in Keebles Yard.
On 6 Nov 1900 the Medical Examiner found Ellis sane to stand trial. The trial lasted two days and Ellis was sentenced to Ipswich Prison to be executed by hanging. Following this sentence further examinations of Ellis's state of mind took place, on 19 Nov 1900 he was found insane and transfered to Broadmoor (5)where he remained until he died in 1919 aged 68.
Louisa and the twins were buried in Haverhill Cemetery on 15 Sep 1900 (there is no headstone)
