Ellen Short was born about 1838 (3) in Eastergate, Sussex.
James had various occuptions during his life. He began labouring, then after his marriage worked for a time as a Police Constable. Ten years later he was trying his hand at being a Innkeeper of the Albion Inn, Littlehampton, Sussex. For the last twenty years of his working life he and Ellen were Gate Porters at the East Preston Union Workhouse. The couple had two children.
