Alfred was born on 28 May 1906 (1) in Pershore, Worcestershire. He left home as a teenager, going to Newmarket to start work as a stablelad. This photograph shows Alfred at Marless Stables in Newmarket with a horse called Strongbow.
Alfred married Caroline Ada Nudd on 6 Sep 1930 (2) in Newmarket. Witnesses to the marriage were A Nudd and M Massie. Caroline's address on the Marriage Certificate was 1 Ruses Square, Newmarket. Alfred was living at Gloster Villa, St Philips Road, Newmarket
Caroline Ada Nudd was born on 27 Sep 1909 (1) in Newmarket, Suffolk. Her parents are Arthur Nudd and Caroline Strangward.
Caroline had lived in Newmarket all her life. She was always known as Carrie and Alfred was always known as Chick. They began married life in a rented flat above a shop in the high street, but as the family came along they moved to 3 Folley Cottages, Icewell Hill, Newmarket. As well as his work at the stables, Alfred was a keen gardener and had an allotment where he grew all the families vegetables, along with rows of dahlias for Caroline.
.WW2 interupted Alfred's work at the stables. He served in the Royal Artillery and was batman to the Commanding Officer, Colonell Dunhill of the tobacco family. He was amongst the first groups of soldiers to get to Belson, and his experience may have been the reason he would not talk about his time during the war.
After the war he now had a family of five children and decided not to return to the stable life he had known, but went to work on the Railways where he remained until he retired. Their house on Icewell Hill was compulsory purchased when the area was redeveloped. Alfred and Caroline initially moved to Exning but they were not happy there and soon returned to Newmarket, moving into Church Cottage, Church Lane which had been Caroline's fathers house.
